Bush Pilot NOTAM

With the advent of the “Bush Pilot Division” we have added three new areas of flying, they are “RED LAKE” – “LYNN LAKE” – “CHURCHILL”, all in western Canada.  Each one will have its own set of flights with a narration for just about all of them.  These are all very interesting flights and flown in each season become “four” distinct set of flights.

The concept for changing the Alaska Division to the Bush Pilot Division was to, rather than concentrating on a Country, Province, or State, but on a type of flying regardless of where it is performed.  There are many areas of the world involving Bush Flying, I personally know of mines in Mexico, where the Bush Pilot not only has to fly to the mine (usually loaded with explosives) but has to hack the runway out of the forest himself.  Some of the runways run up hill requiring landing up hill and taking off downhill.  Some have to fit the contour of the landing making the runway a crescent shape rather than a straight line.  So regardless of where you are from, join us in “BUSH FLYING” by flying with the Bush Pilot Division.  Plus – if you are aware of any areas of the world where they fly Bush, let us know so that we can research it and add it to our flights. A good example of Bush Flying were the “Air America” flights in Viet Nam.  (ATP Capt. Bill Odell)

The Bush Flights

BETTLES - The last of the Alaska Gold Rush’s was during the late 1890’s along the upper reaches of the Koyukuk River.  Supplies and miners to that region came by large paddle wheel boats, which traversed the Yukon River and the Koyukuk to a trading post that was established by a Gordon Bettles and named after him.  The supplies and miners where off loaded at Bettles, then loaded on horse drawn barges, for the final miles to the gold fields.  Click Here for Bettles Branch

RED LAKE  Red Lake, Ontario, is right dab in the middle of a large Gold exploration and several Gold Mines like the Red Lake Mine, Placer Domes Campbell and the Cochenour Mine.  Aviation support is of major importance to these Gold Mines. Compared to other Gold sites there is every indication significant reserves are yet to be discovered.  Click Here for Flights and Details

LYNN LAKEGrowin’ pains - We are opening another Trading Post, this time at Lynn Lake.  Several Beavers and Otters from Red Lake plus additional are on the way.  Everything you own is loaded on your Beaver as you head for your new home.  They say the quarters at the lodge are pretty nice and the meals great.

As the new head man at Lynn Lake you are leaving a day early to get things ready for the other pilots.  New pilots will be flying up in Beavers tomorrow and the next day. They will be flying up with Otters as we adjust to the change at Red Lake.

CHURCHILL - Churchill is most famous as the Polar Bear Capital of the world; it is not unusual to see Polar Bears walking down the main streets.  It is also a homeport for Beluga Whale harvesting by the Inuit people.

Churchill was originally selected as a Trading Post to support primarily, the Inuit in those villages far up in the North, as a consequence the flights will be long with layovers for each as several of the outposts are over 500 miles and will be all Otter flights. Churchill is also home to the famous Northern Studies Center, which does Sub Arctic Research and Education.

YELLOWKNIFE - The capital of the Northwest Territories and the most northerly city in Canada.  Yellowknife lies on the north shore of Great Slave Lake.  The Dog rib and Yellowknife Dene people originally occupied the site, and whites didn’t settle there until 1934, following the discovery of gold on the lake’s shore.   Click Here for Flights and Details

WHITEHORSE - Flying in the Yukon and British Columbia is going to be mostly in the mountains.  This to me is a very exciting way to fly.  But with the mountains it is necessary to fly at high altitudes unless you are adventurous enough to fly the valleys at a much lower altitude.

Our venture into the Yukon has really paid off.  It has put us in touch with a well thought of bush operation in Watson Lake that is available.  The owner is very ill and has to get out of the business but has been very selective in his choosing a new owner.  We have a great track record which impress’s him immensely…  Click Here for Flights and Details
