Gander- Reykjavik
We departed
at 0700 hrs 100 GMT. We climbed to 5500' and took a heading of 084
deg..
On board, 3
souls, the Captain , First Officer and Engineer/Mechanic.
This flight
is a long one over water most of the way.
We have
selected two alternates, Sondrestrom, Greenland about half way to the PNR
and as there is nothing between the PNR and Iceland, we chose Keflavik for that
alternate even if it is close to our destination.
On my
charts there are a few fixes with NDB's Nanortalik, Greenland freq 270 and
Prinz Christian Surd NDB 372.
They were either out of range of our flight path ot they did not activate.
The OAT is
not working so can't tell the outside temperature, but we know it is damned
cold.
Thanks for our warm heater and hot coffee. Everything else is just purring along.
I calculate about 671 miles to go.
Ah this is good--we just tuned in BBC overseas, now we can hear the news and music.
Just had a
thought, maybe some of you would like to break this long flight up.
You can by flying to the alternate one day and the balance the next. This will only add a few hundred miles to the flight.
Oh -
Oh Reykjavik TCA has advised us that Reykjavik is closed and we will have
to use our alternate, Keflavik.
Well
Keflavik is closer and a much better airfield so no problem. In fact we
will only have a small course change to intercept our ILS.
Lets see we will use Rwy 11 109.5 heading 112 Elevation 392. There is a VOR at Keflavic but it seems FS2k doesn't support it.
We are now
about 200nm out and within the Reykjavik TCA.
If you are
using charts, try the map feature which will give you your current position and
you can plot it on your chart.
Unfortunately
I have lost three of my charts, so I will by using my memory. See if you
can tell as we move along.
The Kevlavik NDB (392) just came active and believe or not we are exactly on course.
Time to start cleaning up the aircraft we will be descending soon. Think I will have another cup of coffee.
Wow! doesn't that make you feel good there straight ahead is the coast of Iceland.
Ok guys every body in his seat and buckled up here we go to 2200'.
Level at 2200', turn to a heading of 20 deg. to intercept the ILS.
Got the ILS, starting our turn to the runway. Now we start our descent to the runway, flaps!
Ah - ah - ah - touchdown, we are here. We will taxi to the terminal and they will tow our plane to the hanger for servicing. Of to the hotel, food and sleep. Breakfast at 0600, departure at 0700. Great flight!
