Southern Airways January 1955

DC-3 at Natchez, MS

On June 10^th, 1949, Southern Airways first scheduled flight a DC-3 departed Atlanta GA for Memphis TN with intermediate stops at Gadsen, Birmingham and Tuscaloosa AL and Columbus MS.

Eventually Southern owned 30 DC-3 variants . Twenty six Martin 4-0-4’s were added to the fleet beginning in 1961. In 1967 they retired the DC-3’s and took delivery of their first DC-9 jet.

Southern Airways merged with North Central Airlines in 1979 and formed Republic Airlines Inc. In 1980 Republic acquired Hughes Airwest making the airline a national carrier.

In 1986 Republic was acquired by North West.
