Maritime Central Airways

Maritime Central Airways was founded in 1941 at Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island. The first service was between Charlottetown and Moncton in New Brunswick, followed by a service from Charlottetown to the Magdalen Islands.

The initial fleet consisted of a Barclay-Grow seaplane, a Fairchild 24 and a Boeing 247D. By 1946 the fleet had grown to one DH-89a Rapide, four Lockheed Electra 10s, two Cessna T-50 Cranes and three DC-3s. Services had expanded to Nova Scotia and the annual total passenger traffic had grown to 32,000.

Further fleet acquisitions in the early 50’s included a Canso and a C-46, as well as further DC-3s. By 1953 Maritime Central Airways was the third largest carrier in Canada.

Maritime Central Airways were taken over by Eastern Provincial Airways in 1963.
