Essair were amongst the first of the new classification of feeder air
carriers recognised by the Civil
Aeronautics Board
in July
1944.
Essair began an experimental passenger and express service between
Houston and Amarillo via Abilene in January
1939,
but this was suspended six months later because of an appeal by Braniff
which considered the operation to be an intrusion into its sphere of
influence.
In
November
1943
the Civil
Aeronautics Board selected Essair to operate the service,
expressing the opinion that such an airline was better adapted to serve
local needs than the main trunkline carriers.
Essair changed
their name to Pioneer Air Lines in 1946.
