BEA Scottish Services
The flights below came from the Summer
’47 timetable from www.timetableimages.com
. We will be following the services within the Scottish Highland and Islands in
this feature.
There is one unique route within this
list. Flights to and from Barra are dependent on the state of the tide as the
runway is on the beach. Seventy years on the service is operated by Twin Otters
with the same timetable limitation.
These services were flown using de
Havilland Dragon Rapide and DC-3 aircraft, with some
services initially being flown using Junkers JU-52 aircraft. Reliability and
spares issues meant that the JU-52s were quickly replaced by Rapides. By the
mid ‘50s the services were taken over by de Havilland Herons which were better
suited to the route demands than the larger DC-3s.
The airport for Glasgow at this time
was a couple of miles to the west of the modern Glasgow Airport in Renfrew. We
will be using the modern airport which is in FS9 and FSX.

Flight Simulator Files
There is a repaint for the default DC-3 for FS2004 for the
slightly later BEA scheme which can be found at www.flightsim.com in beadc3.zip. The same era
of scheme is included in the payware MAAM DC3. Dragon
Rapides for FS9 and FSX are available in the library at www.cbfsim.co.uk
I think Keyline paint schemes for this era were done at one
time for the DC-3 but I cannot now find them.
