Feature of the Month

DC-3 Airways World Tour  (Click on WR2008)

I believe the flight information will be released on the web-site in a day or two.  As soon as available try doing some practice flights.   The previous World Rally taught me a lot, including how to make a procedure turn after flying directly over the field on downwind.  It will be worth the effort.

Historic Bluegrass Airlines

I just received a copy of the March 1946 American Aviation air traffic guide (forerunner of the OAG).  I have updated the Historic Bluegrass Airlines page with the 3/46 schedule.  We still don’t know what aircraft were used except “Twin engine transport”  They were surplus from WWII so they were probably  Douglas C-47’s (DC-3) or  Beechcraft C-45’s (D-18).

WestcoastATC time for September 2008

Don’t get excited about our 25 hour 36 minute average this month.  We are in violation of AIM 4.6.1.

Fortunately the WestCoastATC hours police aren’t watching us or Virtual Business Jet this month.

A reminder, You can fly all you want on the free servers, but are limited to reporting 120 hours per month. So after you log 120 hours don’t file any flight plans.  The exception is for ATC flights, there is no limit.  It must be disappointing to WCATC that our pilots did not fly any ATC flights this month.  I’m guilty of this also, as I like to think I’m flying in the 1930’s,40’s or 50’s.  I’m not interested in SIDS or STARS, and mostly just NDB’s and VOR’s no GPS.  It would be nice to have a controller at the destination airport when we have a group of pilots.

We have a new rule.  When signing up as a new pilot we require a first and last name.  It would be super cool if pilots who previously signed up with a “handle” or first name only would submit a new application so I could update the roster to maintain uniformity.

Why do pilots sign up, and then never report a flight?   Is there some prestige just in belonging to BGA?  Last month I didn’t list new pilots who hadn’t flown.  It wasn’t for spite, I deleted all the pilots with zero hours and forgot to check for new pilots before that.  Before I prepare next months newletter, I intend to delete new pilots who don’t fly any flights within 3 months of joining.  Even though that adds work for me, it will cut down on the size of the data base for the auto-pirep system.

If you are a pilot who has never reported a flight, now is the time to do it.  Auto-Pirep System  Log in and submit a pirep.  If you forgot your login name and password, e-mail me at bill@billvons.com   Please give me your name and pilots ID.

Regarding the Forum

The old forum is about to be deleted.  If there is anything you want to copy from there, let me know as I have put it in maintenance mode, thereby locking it to everyone but mysef.

The new forum is working well.  One area of concern is that many of you have left your sign-in name to default as your display name.  That means very few of us know who you are when you post.  To correct this, after you log-in click “Profile”  then click “Modify Profile”  Then 5 lines down you will see “Display Name”.  Put your name in the box and at the bottom of the page click “Modify Profile”.  Thanks

From the C.E.O.

It has been 10 weeks since my hip replacement.  Everything is going well, except for some swelling in my legs and feet.  I am back on the road driving.  We plan to take our first overnight trip to view the fall foliage in the Bloomsburg PA area soon.

Don’t forget to check out the forum and add your 3 cents.

That’s all for now,

Bill Von Sennet
