Our ObjectiveTo provide a fun event for flight simulation pilots to compete with others from every corner of the globe and to test the flight and navigation skills of pilots during 17 flights over ocean and coastal terrain. Most of our stops are on islands along the North Coast of Australia. Welcome to 14th Annual EventThe Great Aussie Air Rally 2015
We begin at YHID with 8 flights visiting all of the airports in the Torres Straits Islands, returning to Horn Island. The shortest runway is 1,722’
From Horn Island we head across the Gulf of Carpentaria to YPGV Gove, and then drop in at 8 airports along the northern coast ending at Darwin.
Not for use in Real World Navigation
Most of our stops are in restricted areas. They are home to the indigenous people of Australia: The Torres Straits Islanders and the Aborigines of Arnhem Land. Permission must be obtained to visit these areas, and fuel and lodging are in scarce supply at best. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited at most stops.
